Mission Statement

The mission of the Embassy of Finland in Kathmandu is threefold:

  • As Nepal is struggling with development challenges, the Embassy contributes to the problem solving process in order to promote solidarity, peace, democracy, equality, human rights, sustainable development and the principle of rule of law in the country.
  • Embassy plans and executes Finnish foreign policy as well as security policy by utilizing Finnish expertise.
  • Embassy provides administrative services to promote trade, tourism and cultural exchange between Finland and Nepal (for instance visas, publicity and consular services).

Prosperous Nepal as the goal

Finland supports the Three Year Plan of the Government of Nepal (2013 - 2016) which has the target to graduate the country from the category of the Least Developed Countries by 2022. This requires further achievements in the poverty reduction and in increasing the average national product per capita.

A devastating earthquake shook Nepal in 2015 causing major damage, especially in the central regions. Finland is committed to supporting Nepal in the reconstruction activities.

Finland supports trade and investment between Nepal and Finland. A valuable point of reference for establishing new contacts is Team Finland coordinated by the ambassador of Finland in Kathmandu.

Finland is a member of the European Union and follows its guidelines in trade policy and foreign relations.

Protecting and Supporting Human Rights Defenders - Public Guidelines of the Foreign Ministry of Finland on the implementation of the European Union Guidelines on Human Rights Defenders were published 27.11.2014.

The wider international donor community aims to enhance the prerequisites for the prosperous, stable and democratic Nepal so that it can add to the stability of the South Asia region.
